Today I want to talk about reading. Do you wish you read more books? Do you own piles of books you’ve been meaning to read, or will read as soon as you get time?
I want to start by telling you a story: I’m an avid reader. In my teens I finished almost everything on the shelves of the local library. But then life got in the way, between studying, starting full time employment I just stopped reading. I can’t tell you exactly when it happened, or even why. Only that it did. There was always other things to do, netflix to watch and if I read I read for school.
Then suddenly I realized I missed it. I missed reading, I missed the world it gave me. I missed not being able to follow the water cooler conversation. And believe you me, when you work in a library there is a lot of talk about books during lunch break!
So I decided I would change my reading habits. It’s been a slow change, and how much I read goes up and down, but I read more now. And at the beginning of 2016 I decided I would step up my reading even more. I set myself the lofty goal of reading 100 books this year. And I decided that what I needed to do was establish a reading habit: to read 30 minutes every day.
Reading is all about habits, and this habit worked for me. I wont reach 100 books this year (currently sitting pretty at 72!), but I know I read more this year than I did in 2015. The main reason I didn’t reach my goal is that in October I broke my habit. And once it was broken I didn’t manage to find it again. But I have decided to try it again, starting January 1st I invite you to join me: let’s read together for the first 21 days of the year, to build better reading habits together!
The challenge is to read every day from January 1st to January 21st. It doesn’t have to be 30 minutes a day, you can pick your own goal. It might seem like a lot, but we will do it together. And together it is possible to kick start our reading habits and make 2017 a great reading year!
This free challenge includes an epic workbook, trackers and 12 emails over 21 days to keep you motivated. I will also be hanging out in the #rockyourreading tag on Instagram to encourage and answer questions.
I promise you that reading more will bring you the kind of value that can’t be measured. Giving yourself the gift of time for yourself this year is one of the most important decisions you can make. It’s about making the time for your wellbeing.
So will you join me? I promise we’ll have fun! I have so many great books I want to read in 2017, how about you?
