4 things to do today to create a clutter-free home

Starting to declutter you home can feel daunting, and overwhelming in a busy life, and a clutter-free home? Just forget it! Hopefully I’m going to make it easier to get started today.

When decluttering, one of the most important things is to stop clutter from happening in the first place. It doesn’t matter how much you declutter, or how much you tidy, if new clutter is appearing just as fast. So I’ve put together a list of 4 easy things you can do today to create a clutter-free home.

Create an physical inbox

Have a designated spot for papers you bring into your home. Just like your online inbox it’s good to have a place to put all papers. Then when you have time you can go through them and decide what to keep or not. I know I used to just put papers down wherever was closer when I got inside the door. I feel a lot happier about my surfaces now that I have an inbox!

I haven’t done this myself (yet!), but there’s a great article here at JustaGirlandHerBlog about going completely paperless that I recommend! It’s such an interesting thing to read about even if you don’t feel ready to take that step yet!

Clear one surface

Just one. Give it a chance! And try to keep that surface clutter free. Only place things you are using there and tidy it up after you finish. See how you like it, and if you like it, you can expand that space later to include more of your house. You can pick any surface; a table, a countertop or your nightstand. Just see what feels natural.

Give things a place

Think of five things you use daily (keys, bags, etc) and ask yourself: does this have a place? If the answer is no, find a place for that thing to be! We spend far to much time out of our days to look for things that are lost, be it keys, your sunglasses or headphones. Isn’t that time you would rather spend doing something else? As an extra bonus you won’t have those five things cluttering up your space, because they will have a designated spot.

If the answer to the above question is yes, try to think if you are happy about the place they have or if you want to change it. It’s always good to reflect on how your home is organized.

Think about the things you bring into your home

Take a moment to think about the things you bring into your home. It doesn’t matter how much you declutter if you constantly fill your home with new things. Is there anything you don’t necessarily need? Make sure you are mindful of what you bring home. Is it necessary? Is it making you happy? Is this needed?

There you have it! Easy things you can start doing today to create a clutter-free home! It doesn’t take much to feel like you are moving in the right direction. Now I want to hear from you? Do you have any tips for me? Or have you tried any of my tips, and how did it go? Please share!
